Rotary Young Musician Competition - 30/01/2025

On Wednesday 29th January, the South Wales Area Final for the Rotary Young Musician competition was held at Cowbridge School. We were delighted to host the event which allowed fantastic young talent across South Wales to compete against each other ahead of the South and Mid Wales District Final. The audience were blown away by the standard of performances, and we were particularly proud of the Cowbridge students who took part. Isobel McMeechan (Y12) and Gwenan Jones (Y12), both extremely talented vocalists, took to the stage and performed two varied programmes, featuring music by Bach, Faure, Mozart and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Both were commended on their portrayal of the pieces, as well as their technical ability to confidently sing in various languages. Osian Bowen (Y12) and Isabel Harris (Y13) performed in the instrumental competition, with Osian playing an exciting repertoire of Beethoven and Bartok on the piano, and Isabel performing an equally exciting programme of Ravel and Smetana on the violin. The adjudicators commented on their excellent stage presence, and the technical difficulty of the pieces performed. Whilst the adjudicators deliberated, the audience were entertained by our fantastic Cowbridge School Senior Jazz Group, a student-led ensemble who certainly contributed a 'feel-good' factor to the evening. Each competitor was given a certificate, and Isobel McMeechan and Isabel Harris were announced the winners. Both will go through to the South and Mid Wales District Final on Saturday 15th February in All Saints Church, Porthcawl at 2pm.
